A church service at the United Methodist Church in the Durumi area of Abuja was abruptly halted when a serious fight broke out among congregants.
The altercation, which lasted for hours, resulted in damage to church property and required police intervention to bring it under control. Despite initial efforts by the FCT command operatives, the situation only calmed down after tear gas was deployed.
The fight stemmed from a disagreement among the church elders regarding whether to separate from their headquarters in the United States.
The conflict arose over the headquarters’ legalization of practices that some members felt were not in line with Nigerian culture. The church has since been locked, and some elders were taken to the police station for interrogation.
The police have confirmed the incident, with FCT command spokesperson Josephine Adeh stating that the Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, has summoned the church elders for a meeting to address the situation.
