The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has announced plans to arrest drivers and impound vehicles that lack speed limit devices, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents in the state.
Speaking at a news conference in Awka on Friday, the FRSC Sector Commander, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, highlighted that the majority of road crashes in the state were caused by speed violations, leading to tyre bursts and loss of control.
She emphasized that strict enforcement of the speed limit device regulation had become necessary due to reckless driving, vehicle overloading, and unsafe transportation practices involving both people and goods.
“The policy thrust of the new Corps Marshall is to revamp operations and improve road safety performance in Anambra,” Alexander said. “I aim to put FRSC at the forefront in Anambra, create a significant impact, and reduce both road crashes and disobedience to traffic rules.”
She warned that minimal enforcement would soon begin, stating that while drivers have been mandated to install speed limit devices, many have failed to comply. “We will start arresting defaulters, imposing fines, and insisting that the devices are installed before releasing their vehicles,” she added.
To ensure the initiative’s success, a joint task force will be formed in collaboration with other agencies to manage road congestion and promote safety during the ‘Ember’ months.
The FRSC also plans to work closely with the media to raise public awareness of traffic regulations and will collaborate with the state government to improve road conditions, remove obstructions, and install necessary road signs.
“Our ultimate goal is to ensure that road users arrive at their destinations safely and without incident,” Alexander concluded.
